Joan Henderson has been with Oklahoma Today since November 1994 and is responsible for all aspects of the magazine’s operation.
In 2006, Joan spearheaded the OKT Archive project in conjunction with the Oklahoma State University library’s Electronic Publishing Center. To date, fifty-five years of Oklahoma Today issues are available free on the archive.
A recognized industry leader, Joan has served on numerous boards and been a featured speaker at MPA workshops in New York and at Folio in Chicago. She has also conducted webinars for both MPA-IMAG and Folio/Red 7 Media, been a judge for the Society of Professional Journalists and the Oklahoma Press Association, and is a frequent guest lecturer at Oklahoma colleges and universities. In May 2011, she was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame.
Since 1996, Joan has served on the board of directors for the International Regional Magazine Association. In 2007, during her term as president of IRMA, Oklahoma Today hosted the annual IRMA convention in Oklahoma City and at Quartz Mountain Lodge in Lone Wolf.
Born in New York and raised in Stillwater, Joan graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1979. She holds a bachelor’s degree in humanities. An accomplished photographer, her hand-tinted black-and-white images have been featured in numerous periodicals and in photographic exhibitions in Oklahoma, Texas, and Massachusetts.
