Young Bucks

Tomorrow’s state leaders in business and agriculture are today’s exhibitors in the Oklahoma Youth Expo, the world’s largest annual junior livestock show. Oklahoma 4-H and FFA members ages eight to nineteen will show off cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, and ag mechanics projects representing months or even years of dedicated work. Nearly $2 million in awards will be handed out to expo students. Even if there is not a young rancher in your own life to cheer on, it’s hard not to be inspired by youthful ambition when attending one of nearly two weeks of exhibitions at the OKC Fairgrounds.
March 11-21. Admission, free.

Fest of Fortitude

Usually the words endurance challenge aren’t a great well to sell readers on the fun events we like to promote in our weekly event calendar, but The Mid South endurance festival in Stillwater is one place where that phrase is not only apt, but a selling point for hundreds of people. Compete in dirt road biking challenges ranging from thirteen to a hundred miles in length. It’s not all sweat, dirt, and gravel, though. The fest’s three days include plenty of food trucks, rider meetups, recovery yoga sessions, after parties with a live music stage, and much more.
March 13-16. Registration, $25-$225.

It’s time to bring a little greenery back into our lives. The Grove Area Chamber of Commerce will have everything thumbs of varying green to brown shades will need to jumpstart their spring at their twenty-seventh annual Home & Garden Show, held at the former Whoops location at 102 Lannell Drive in Grove. In addition to useful gardening seminars and around a hundred vendor booths with useful projects, there will also be demonstrations and talks offering tips on the subjects of cooking, home improvement, and more. If you’ve felt cooped up this winter, here is your chance to return to homesteading action.

Put Your Foot Down

Hidden amongst the rocky ridges and cobblestone of Medicine Park is one of the state’s liveliest music festivals. Parkstomp, a bluegrass festival that also features country, rockabilly, rock, and punk acts, has been a Wichita Mountains music tradition for fifteen years. This year’s headliners include Front Porch, MoonShroom, and Bottom of the Barrel Band. Set up your lawn chairs and blankets for a good view around the Main Stage at Hitchen Post Park, and when the music’s not playing feel free to visit the shops and galleries that give this mountain village its charm.
March 14-16. Admission, free.

All About Tonight

Forget Key West, those hoping to party Blake Shelton style this Spring Break need to head towards Tishomingo. Spring Blake is for the party animals looking for an alternative to “Some Beach” this mid-term holiday. Though Shelton himself won’t be in attendance, his essence will be felt throughout this day of revelry at Ole Red Tishomingo. The main event is a Blake Shelton tribute by Blake Nation 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ole Red’s Doghouse venue. But any time that day is a good time to stop Tishomingo by for more live music, a car show, and the Redneck Triathlon team challenge featuring cornhole, beach volleyball, and axe throwing.
March 15. Redneck Triathlon team registration, $200. Concert admission, free for Ole Red customers.
