Blast From the Past
Time travel remains largely the purview of those with the expertise to create a flux capacitor, but that doesn’t mean history is out of reach for the rest of us. At the Fort Washita Historic Site in Durant, visitors to the Rendezvous at Fort Washita can relive the decades between 1820 and 1850 with trappers, traders, storytellers, and Chickasaw stomp dancers. Vendors will be selling treats, but traditional food samples will be offered on Thursday and Friday. March 30-April 3. Admission, Free. chickasaw.net
Not Quills
The majority of professional writing these days is done on computers with word processing programs and, despite the name, that’s how it’s done for the most part at the Scissortail Creative Writing Festival at East Central University in Ada. No guarantees that visitors won’t see a quill pen, but this event—now in its seventeenth year—is more about the content of the writing than the implements used. More than seventy authors from around the country, including celebrated writers Arthur Sze, Jenn Givhan and Lou Berney, will attend this event dedicated to listening, learning, and better writing. Choose Your Own Adventure
Join musical storytellers James Harrison Monaco and Jerome Ellis for the always changing James & Jerome: Piano Tales performances at Oklahoma Contemporary. For four shows, the New York-based duo work with audiences to choose which stories are told and in what order, making every performance different from the last. March 31-April 2. Tickets, $15-$40. oklahomacontemporary.org

Fly a Kite
Oklahoma has so much wind it made it into the state song, but the organizers of the Dogwood Days Festival in Idabel are taking advantage of the abundance of gales for a kids’ kite-flying event. But even those who are not fans of zephyrs will find plenty to do, including horseshoe and cornhole tournaments, a chicken cook-off, a 5K, a beef rib cooking competition, and more. April 1 & 2. Admission, Free. theidabelchamber.com
