He’s A Mean One
By Kiersten Stone
A very special guest is coming to the Civic Center Music Hall November 6-10. He’s been described as cuddly as a cactus, as charming as an eel, and a bad banana with a greasy black peel. If you haven’t guessed him yet, he’s the mean one, Mr. Grinch. The OKC Broadway will be performing Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical featuring the hit songs “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas.” Attendees can immerse themselves in the tale of the one who’s heart is two sizes too small and ring in the holiday season being reminded the true meaning behind it.

Skating By
By Ben Luschen
Running with scissors in your hands is considered a safety hazard by the powers that be, but if you strap them to your shoes and do it over a patch of ice it’s called a wholesome family activity. OK, so to be fair the Devon Ice Rink in downtown Oklahoma City is not just any patch of ice, and a nice pair of skates is a far cry from my scissor-blade shoe monstrosity. So I think our friend Safety Chase won’t have any problem with me recommending the soft opening of the Devon Ice Rink this Friday at the Myriad Botanical Gardens, starting 3:00 p.m. The 5,500-square-foot outdoor Devon Ice Rink is a downtown tradition of the holiday season, and you can join the official opening celebration beginning Saturday at 10:30 a.m. If you can’t make it on that specific day though, don’’t worry. The rink will remain open all seven days of the week through February 2nd.
November 8-February 2. Admission, $9-$14 myriadgardens.org

Top Dogs
By Megan Rossman
There are two things I’m certain we need more of in this world, and it’s wizard-like beards and rockin' guitar. Fortunately, you can get an earful—and an eyeful—of sharp-dressed men and women and their facial hair at the ZZ Top show on November 8 at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville. The beards are sure to be flowing wild and free as the band plays hits like Tush, Legs, and Gimme All Your Lovin’ on this magical night just north of the state line. The concert is sold out, but determined ZZ lovers will get their tushes on StubHub.com and figure something out. For more information, visit winstar.com.

Iron Class
By Nathan Gunter
I was having a discussion with a family member yesterday about travel destinations, and I brought up New Orleans, where I’ve always had a lot of fun. The person I was talking to cited the story she’d heard from some drunken college students about their trip to NOLA, and said she’d decided from there that she’d never go. I reminded her never to make life decisions based on what college students say, then said our last trip to NOLA was the most fun ever and she should go. And while there, I said, take a cooking class at the New Orleans Cooking School, which was our favorite activity last time we went.
But if a trip to the Crescent City isn’t in your immediate future, may I recommend heading to The Chisholm—formerly the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center—in Kingfisher this Saturday, November 9, for their Cast Iron Cooking Class. You’ll try out excellent Dutch Oven recipes, learn how best to care for your cast-iron skillet, and explore historic recipes in a fun environment that ends with a big group meal. The class is restricted to those 12 or older, and tickets are $30 per person or $50 for couples. There are only 30 spots available, so reserve yours now by calling (405) 375-5176.

Pecan Do It
By Ben Luschen
Who knew pecans could bring folks together like family? Head to the Oklahoma Pecan Festival on November 9 in Ardmore, where you can go nuts for pecan treats, live tree carvings, and cornhole tournaments! With tree giveaways every hour, craft beer, food trucks, a Veterans parade, and a kids' corner, there's something for everyone at Depot Park. Plus, don’t miss the car show and live music celebrating Southern Oklahoma's tastiest harvest season. Just be warned—after one bite, you might find yourself in a nutty relationship with pecans for life!
