Fairly Free

Check your watches, because it's County Fair O'Clock all over Oklahoma this week. Seventeen of the seventy-seven counties in the Sooner State are holding free fairs this week, which means there's a better than 1-in-5 chance that any county you wander into will be partying. Or really commit to the idea and try to hit them all, from the Carter County Free Fair in Ardmore to the Woods County Free Fair in Alva. Find out more on TravelOK.com.

Chili Bowl Blues

For more than four decades, the town of Wagoner has opened their hearts, ears, and mouths for the annual Bluegrass & Chili Festival. Enjoy tunes from the likes of Roving Gamblers, Mid-Life Crisis Band, Heartland Xpress, and more while the smells of the Mid-American Regional Chili Cook-Off wafts through the crowd. But don't fret—visitors can grab a taster kit for $5 and vote for their favorite hearty dishes. There's also inflatables for the kids, antique tractor shows for the adults, and a craft tent for those inspired to create. September 9-10. Admission, free. bluegrasschilifest.com

Break a Leg

It's okay to tell you that Enid's Gaslight Theatre is presenting a production of Shakespeare's MacBeth at Government Spring Park. but when you actually attend the performance, please call it "The Scottish Play." Not that we believe in curses or superstitions, but feel free to avoid crossing a black cat's path under a ladder on Friday the 13th while breaking a mirror and stepping on a crack if it makes you feel better. If there's any cursing to be done, it will be by those who missed this free outdoor production. September 9-11. Admission, free. gaslighttheatre.org

The Oklahoma Sound

More than twenty local artists and bands will perform at PiG Fest in Wellston. Now in its second year, this local music-focused festival started as the Pig in the Ground Festival in 2021 and it is only getting bigger. Samantha Crain, Rainbows Are Free, Carter Sampson, Jarvix, and more will perform and a bevy of tasty food trucks—including Texlahoma BBQ, OK Taco Company, and Buns On The Run—will be serving the hungry masses. September 9-11. Tickets, $28.79-$72.71. pigfestok.com

Killer Fun

A blessed few of us will ever be asked to solve a murder, which is a relief considering how often some of us enter a room, immediately freeze, and realize we forgot why we were there in the first place. But any amateur Hercule Poirots can still try their hand at cracking a case during Murder at the Masquerade at the Ardmore Convention Center. Formal attire is recommended, since the crime took place at a fancy dinner—which detectives will get to enjoy during the investigation—and registration is required. September 10. Tickets, $45. exploreardmore.com
