So many cities and states were named for politicians, but sometimes other folks get in on the fun. There are a few legends about this small eastern Oklahoma town’s name. One says that a number of settlers all came from the same place and decided to honor their state of origin—though our friends at the Oklahoma Historical Society say the records don’t bear that out. Instead, it was likely a traveling salesman who came from a nearby state and set up shop in the same place in Indian Territory near Spring Creek. Unable to pronounce his name, locals simply referred to him as “Little (home city).” Over time, it was shortened to a single word, which became the town’s name.
