"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" sounds all well and good now that we've got mail service six days a week—as well as telephones, emails, and text messages—but it really meant something 123 years ago. In fact, on this day in 1900, the first free rural route in Oklahoma was started by the U.S. Postal Service.

Albert Darrow was the first Oklahoma Rural Carrier with a route twenty-four miles long and covering about seven hundred people. He brought his own horse and wagon to the job, for which he was paid $500 a year.

In which present-day Oklahoma town did this first free rural route originate?
