We love our state parks, but there are plenty of national historic sites in Oklahoma as well. One sits just outside Cheyenne: the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site. This protected area preserves the site of the Battle of Washita, in which then-Lt. Col. George Custer led the 7th U.S. Cavalry on a surprise early morning attack on a Cheyenne village, killing warriors, women, and children, as well as taking prisoners as hostages. The entire area around the historic site is a 31,286-acre grassland that stretches all the way into Texas and it's named for the Cheyenne Peace Chief killed in the attack.
What was the name of the Cheyenne Peace Chief for whom the area is named?
