We can argue all day if Oklahoma is considered The West, but there’s no doubt it was wild. Our history is full of some crazy events—check out our recent story on the Red River War or the upcoming feature about Beer City titled “Anarchy in the I.T.” for proof—and everybody knows the story of Oklahoma City stealing Guthrie’s title as state capital. One lesser-known tale takes place in eastern Oklahoma, where a pair of cities went to war over being the county seat. Two towns—one known for recreation, the other as the hometown of a country music superstar—battled at the ballot box with votes and in the streets with guns from 1907 to 1909 to lay claim to the county seat.
What two towns were involved in the war for an eastern Oklahoma county seat?
