The origins of the Oklahoma State Park system can be traced back to the 1930s during the era of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal. The parks were built by the Works Progress Administration and other New Deal agencies with labor from the Civilian Conservation Corps. The first park completed and opened to the public was Lake Murray State Park in Ardmore.
Lake Murray State Park is still open today and remains the largest of all the parks at more than 12,000 acres. The park is named for former Oklahoma governor Bill Murray, and the iconic Tucker Tower looking out over the lake was originally built as a summer home for Murray, though he never ended up living there.
In what year was Lake Murray State Park completed, making it the first Oklahoma State Park?
