Oklahoma history is littered with oddballs, though it's probably safe to say the same is true of every state in the union. But among our forebears few were as colorful or controversial as William "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, the ninth governor of Oklahoma.
Though he came into office after several others, Bill was no stranger to Oklahoma politics, having worked pre-statehood for other politicos. In fact, it was during his work for an Oklahoma Territorial governor candidate that Murray got his agriculture-based nickname. Apparently, the future-governor was fond of talking about a large tract of alfalfa he was growing—so much so that the editor of the Tishomingo Capital-Democrat dubbed him "Alfalfa Bill." The nickname stuck with him for the rest of his life.
The man he was stumping for at the time did not become governor of the territory or state, but he twice served Governor of the Chickasaw Nation before his death a year after Oklahoma statehood. Who was this politician?
