Oklahomans love their art, as well they should. It's so important to our state that the newly renovated Oklahoma State Capitol Building houses its own impressive collection of art for the public to enjoy. Among Oklahoma's best art museums is the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, better known as the Gilcrease Museum. Established in 1949 by Thomas Gilcrease, the museum historically displayed a collection of paintings, photos, sculptures, and more with a focus on Indigenous cultures of North and South America. We say historically because the museum is currently on hold while a new building is constructed where the original hodgepodge of buildings once stood.
What was the last day the galleries at the Gilcrease Museum were open before it temporarily closed for a new structure to be built?
