Oklahoma takes a lot of pride in Route 66 and with good reason. The Sooner State boasts more than 400 drivable miles of the coast-to-coast highway—the most in the entire country. Beginning in 1926, the Mother Road connected Chicago to California after winding its way throughout the United States. Businesses popped up all along Route 66 to cater to motorists, and many of the iconic neon signs still shine today.
But Route 66's dominance couldn't last forever. It was decommissioned some years ago as the government decided it had been officially replaced by the interstate system. Still, it draws visitors from across the country and around the world who want to experience the heyday of America's motoring culture.
In what year was Route 66 decommissioned?
