Oklahoma's state butterfly is the black swallowtail. Photo by Paul Brennan
Oklahoma is green again after a refreshing spring, which means flowers are blooming and lots of butterflies are flitting about, including the official state butterfly: Papilio Polyxenes, aka the black swallowtail. Not only is it gorgeous, but the black swallowtail is pretty big, too, with a wingspan more than four inches. It's also part of a mimicry ring, which means it is trying to look like a pipevine swallowtail butterfly. Why? Because pipevine's diet makes them taste terrible to birds, so it's a camouflage to avoid being eaten. Oklahoma isn't the only state that loves the black swallowtail. One other state claims it as state butterfly, though they did so years after Oklahoma.
What other state named the black swallowtail its official state butterfly?
