This week in 1937, Oklahoma officially adopted the Eastern Redbud as its state tree, but not without some controversy. After it was suggested to the governor, a woman from Tulsa suggested it would not be religiously appropriate because of its rumored role in the death of Judas Iscariot. After religious scholars pointed out that the tree is never mentioned in the Bible, it was quickly approved.
