Oklahoma has had its fair share of notable governors since statehood in 1907, including a few characters like “Alfalfa” Bill Murray. While Charles Haskell was the state’s first governor, he was not Oklahoma Territory’s first governor. That honor went to a military man and lawyer chosen by President Benjamin Harrison. Among his accomplishments were the founding of the universities that would become the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University and vetoing a bill that would have moved the capital to Kingfisher. Notably, Oklahoma Territory’s first governor shared a name with another famous first in American politics.
