Many Oklahoma towns—and towns across the country—were named for the people who brought the railroad through, which was a lifeline for many struggling communities. But some of our favorites are named for people who, as best we can tell, never even came close to the places named for them. That list includes a Kiowa County city that has spawned its fair share of notable residents—an acclaimed organist and an Oklahoma Poet Laureate among them—but was instead named for a national politician from New Jersey who died two years before it was founded.
What is the name of the Kiowa County city and who was it named for?
